Oneonta Gorge While often overlooked, this trail is definitely worth exploring. The trial takes you to a cavern behind Ponytail Falls. Ponytail Falls was created by a lava flow that also buried a layer of soft soil. The falls washed out the underlying soil, creating the cavern. Beyond the falls, the trail loops around Oneonta Gorge, a narrow mossy ravine filled with knee to waist deep water. The best way to see the Oneonta Gorge is to wade up the creek from the highway bridge. This is best explored on a hot summer day, when the water isn’t too deep or too cold.
To get there take I-84 east of Portland to Ainsworth Park exit 35, turn right and follow the old scenic highway 1.5 miles back to Horsetail Falls Trailhead parking area. The trail starts beside 176-foot Horsetail Falls.
